Lenka Záhorková

Lenka often balances between design, applied art forms and fine arts. Her works tend to be based on quest for parallels between the constructional/technological and the ideological perspective. Her works' topics include the cycle of life and the eternal cycle - the creation, extinction and renewal of objects. In addition, she also pursues her artistic and social project TAK TO BYLO.

She graduated from the Ceramics studio of Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design & Art, University of West Bohemia, studied product design and completed an internship at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk's in the sculpture studio. She has won several awards for her products, including two awards of the National Student Design Award, was selected for the Talents section at the Tendence fair in Frankfurt am Main and nominated for the Designblok'19 award for her TAK TO BYLO project. The same project won her the Empathy Award of Komerční banka and the National Gallery, in whose premises the exhibition of the same name took place in 2021-2022, right after the exhibition in the Slovak National Gallery. The pieces from the project can be found in the permanent collection of contemporary art of the Museum of Applied Arts of the Moravian Gallery in Brno.

The work is focused on experiment; experimenting with the material, its aesthetic possibilities, and technological limits. The series of objects is created using a technique atypical for porcelain, namely only from porcelain dust at high heat without any supporting structure. I was inspired by a simple fact of technology – most materials burn in high heat and become dust, but it is the other way around in this case as the porcelain dust turns into a solid structure.
It is thus possible to find symbols and ideological parallels to the theme of creation and destruction of objects in this work, offering also an existential or, if you'd like, a religious overlap.

This artistic-social project cooperates with senior citizens, encouraging them to illustrate their life stories and memories. The illustrations are transferred to waste material porcelain dishes that carry ideas about the values brought with age.

Mnemosyne is the author's guide in exploring the phenomenon of memory and the recording of human memories. In an abstract form, it presents processes such as information recording, selection, preservation, and recall or memory reproduction. The supporting element is the fossilized imprints of places or moments, and the production steps of these artifacts imitate the very processes of memory.

A spinning top - designer toy. Thanks to the use materials such as wood and porcelain, it may serve also as souvenir or an interior decorations.
